The sky is the limit for low-cost 3D printer

Sliperiet at Umeå Arts Campus is in the process of making a 3D printed Tower of Babel using a novel hanging printer. This offers a low-cost solution and increased flexibility to print large volumes. A type of 3D printer has been demonstrated at Sliperiet, Umeå Arts Campus. Suspended on thin fishing lines, 'Hangprinter' is currently making a Tower of Babel as part of the +Project innovation initiative.

Static electricity can control nanoballoon

Molecular sized machines could in the future be used to control important mechanisms in the body. In a recent study, researchers at University of California, Berkeley and Umeå University show how a nanoballoon comprising a single carbon molecule ten thousand times thinner than a human hair can be controlled electrostatically to switch between an inflated and a collapsed state.

Textile emits bright light for more than 180 hours

Researchers have fabricated a large-area textile that emits bright yellow light for more than 180 hours. The low-cost, flexible, transparent textile has potential applications in light-emitting clothing, signs, and architectural features. The scientists, led by Ludwig Edman, a professor in the Organic Photonics and Electronics Group at Umeå University in Sweden, together with researchers of LunaLEC AB and sefar AG, have published a pap...

Designing acoustic devices using thin materials

Acoustic devices like mufflers and loudspeakers are all around us. In the design of such devices, computer simulations and numerical optimisation algorithms are becoming increasingly useful in order to shorten the product development time and decrease the number of physical prototypes. Esubalewe Lakie Yedeg has in his research developed computer simulation approaches and applied them to the design of various acoustic devices.
