Polymicro Technologies has successfully developed an optical fibre comprising a low -OH synthetic fused silica core, PolyClad hard polymer clad and ETFE buffer/jacket. Featuring high tensile strength and minimal bend radius for high reliability, Polymicro’s 200/230 PolyClad Optical Fibre accommodates short-to-medium distance Data Communications in Factory Automation and Process Control Applications and withstands harsh-temperature, chemical and radiation environments.

“Optimised at 650 and 850 nm with typical attenuation of less than 10 and 6 dB/km, respectively, our new broad spectrum 200 µm hard polymer clad fibre features a tensile strength of well over the industry standard of 150 kpsi and minimal bend radius for high reliability,” states Imke Kuester, business development manager, fibre optics, Molex. “Polymicro’s 200/230 PolyClad fibre delivers superior performance coupled with resistance to harsh-temperatures, chemicals and radiation that can lead to fibre degradation and shorten product life.”

Crimp and cleave compatible and Euro RoHS compliant, the 200/230 PolyClad fibre features a large 200 µm core and high numerical aperture for easy termination and high coupling efficiency to the light source. Connector offsets are minimised down to ≤5 µm due to the high clad/core diameter ratio. With tensile strength of ≥150 kpsi, minimal bend radius of ≥10 mm (short-term) and ≥16 mm (long-term), and typical attenuation of ≤6 dB/km at 850nm and ≤10 dB/km at 650nm, the Polymicro fibre is extremely dependable even in harsh environmental conditions.

The 200/230 PolyClad fibre is designed for a range of high performance short-to-medium distance data communications in a broad spectrum of factory automation and process control applications. These include those found in chemical plants, refineries, avionics, automotive, production and manufacturing plants, mobile platforms, wind turbines, power plants and PLCs.
