Permitting the device to directly drive 1200V IGBTs, the FOD8332 advanced 2.5A output current IGBT/MOSFET drive optocoupler has been introduced by Fairchild. The optocoupler features an insulation working voltage rating 13% higher than competing devices, Common Mode Transient Immunity (CMTI) over 100% better than competitive solutions and Dynamic Power Consumption per cycle (ESW) during switching 50% less than the competition.

The FOD8332 advanced optocoupler is suitable for use in a variety of applications, including: isolated IGBT/power MOSFET gate drives; renewable energy such as solar and wind power inverters; AC and brushless DC motor drives; industrial inverters; uninterruptible power supplies; and induction heating.

System design engineers for industrial applications, such as motor control inverter applications and high performance power systems, are looking for highly integrated gate driving and protection features in a single IC package to simplify design and improve efficiency. These high voltage parts allow systems of a given power rating to operate at higher voltages and lower currents where the noise filtering becomes more efficient, resulting in higher efficiency inverters.

The FOD8332 integrates critical protection features necessary for preventing fault conditions that lead to destructive thermal runaway of IGBTs. It reduces design complexity as most protection features are built-in, eliminating the need for the board designer to specify additional components. The device utilises Fairchild’s proprietary Optoplanar coplanar packaging technology and optimised IC design to achieve high insulation voltage and high noise immunity, characterised by high common mode rejection.

The FOD8332 is housed in a wide body 16-pin small outline plastic package which delivers high isolation performance in a compact package. The advanced optocoupler is available now with delivery 6-10 weeks ARO. Pricing starts from $2.50 (USD) each in 1,000 unit quantities.
