Improving isolated power supply and simplifying gate drive design, the ACPL-302J smart gate drive optocoupler has been announced by Avago Technologies. It features an integrated flyback controller for DC/DC converters and is suitable for driving IGBTs and power MOSFETs in industrial power inverters and motor drives.

Providing a complete and cost-effective gate drive solution, the ACPL-302J provides a 2.5A rail-to-rail output and a full set of fail-safe IGBT diagnostics, protection and fault reporting. With the integrated flyback controller, fewer discrete components and small high-efficiency transformer can be placed next to the device. This reduces the overall footprint and minimises electromagnetic interference (EMI) and noise coupling between IGBT channels.

Operating over a temperature range from -40 to +105°C, the device features integrated active Miller clamp, IGBT DESAT detection, and Under Voltage Lock-Out (ULVO) with feedback reducing bill of materials (BOM) cost and simplifying gate drive design. The high reinforced insulation voltage of VIORM = 1,230 VPEAK facilitates reliable fail-safe protection in high voltage applications. Safety approval from CSA, UL and IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-5 enables fast system level safety clearance and time to market.

Kheng-Jam Lee, Marketing Director, Isolation Product Division, Avago, commented: “The ACPL-302J is our new full-featured 2.5A smart gate drive optocoupler optimised for DC/DC converters. With integrated flyback controller and unrivalled power efficiency and size, the ACPL-302J is the industry’s most cost-effective gate drive solution for industrial power inverter and motor drive applications.”
