Products these days are often not produced in the same place, due to changing demands on product quality and processing speed. Across a variety of industries – from pharma, electronic, food or automotive - commodity flows are getting more complex and production flows are getting faster.

How important has it become then to keep track of a product. Commodity flows have to be transparent, which means traceable, as to not run the risk of health and economic damages. The traceability is accomplished by coding the product and is an obligation to the customer.

The product has to have an explicit identification. This is accomplished through labelling, RFID chips or full matter marking. Therefore, a product is non-interchangeable. Full matter marking means that the code is edged directly into the surface of the product. Either through inkjet, laser or grout injection needle.

The EyeSens DMC is a compact vision sensor, with integrated lens and illumination. There are three different resolutions for the vision sensor - 736x480, 1,024x768 and 1,280x1,024 pixel. The EyeSens has a 1/3“ CMOS sensor and its interfaces are Ethernet, RS232 and optionally also RS422. The lens can be in 6, 12 or 25mm.

The EyeSens DMC can also be equipped with the QR code reader command. Therefore, the vision sensor can read both, DMC and QR code.

The codes are evaluated by the EyeVision image processing software. The drag-and-drop programming does not require programming skills and the code reader command is easy to adjust in the graphical user interface. There is also a process mode where the user can design their own interface.

There are two possibilities concerning the 2D codes - for industrial environments the DMC (Data Matrix Code) is most often used. A DMC contains a high packing density and can be applied to any component part. It can also be read in cases where the code is partly damaged.

The QR code on the contrary is most often used for marketing and media areas. With the QR code, information is automatically found and read.
