This all-rounder combines improved design with low system costs, making it suitable for different vehicle classes and accessible to a broad spectrum of customers.

Power project working on LED replacements for UV light sources
A total of five research institutes and companies have been working on 'UV Power' since February 2017. This is a collaborative project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The partners have made it their goal to provide high-power UV LEDs to cover a wide variety of applications. These LEDs will eventually replace conventional UV light sources, which often contain toxic mercury, in areas such as production, disinfection, the environment, life sciences and medicine. UV LEDs are also likely to open up new areas of application.

Say cheese! Multi-chip LED improves camera flash applications
There is a new addition to the Oslux family from Osram Opto Semiconductors. For the first time, two LED chips and a lens have been integrated into a module. The compact Oslux S2.1 multi-chip LED brings together all the high-tech company’s extensive technical know-how into a new LED version for camera flash applications. With its brightness of 125 lux, it provides uniform illumination of photos and video recordings from mobile devices such as smartphones.

More than 25 years ago, the Topled set a worldwide standard as the first surfacemountable LED. Osram Opto Semiconductors now presents the latest generation, the Topled E1608, which has a package that is smaller than its predecessor models by factor 20. Despite this considerable miniaturization the low-power LED is bright, reliable and robust. The compact Topled offers greater options and greater design flexibility, particularly for car interior applications.

Osram acquires LED Engin Inc

Osram has agreed to acquire U.S.-based LED Engin Inc. in San Jose, California. The company has approximately 30 employees and annual sales of around USD 10 million. LED Engin specializes in ultra-bright, ultra-compact solid state lighting solutions for variety of specialty markets including entertainment lighting, ultraviolet, horticulture, tunable white and medical lighting applications. Its products mainly incorporate LED chips from Osram Opto Semiconductors.

BMW Motorsport will be using biologically effective light from Osram during the 24hour race on the Nürburgring in Germany, taking place on May 27 and 28. As new official partner of BMW Motorsport, Osram will be supplying activating light for drivers and engineers both before and during the race, enhancing their alertness and boosting their concentration.

Compact IREDs target VR and AR eye-tracking systems
A transmitter has been released by Osram Opto Semiconductors, based on the company’s proven Firefly platform, used widely for LEDs in the visible spectrum. The SFH 4055 transmitter, Osram’s smallest side-looking infrared LED to date, has a wavelength of 850nm and is primarily targeted at eye-tracking systems in augmented and virtual reality headsets. Eye-tracking systems use multiple infrared LEDs to illuminate users’ eyes and capture the light reflected back with camera sensors.

Project to develop mass market UV LEDs for disinfection
Eco-friendly purification of water – UV light is already being used to kill water-borne germs but the light sources used for this purpose are still predominantly mercury vapor lamps. UV LEDs have so far proved unattractive for reasons of cost. The aim of the UNIQUE project funded by the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Media, Energy and Technology is therefore to develop high-power UV LEDs for industrial use.

Osram has acquired a stake in Munich-based start-up agrilution. The lighting group holds a strategic minority interest in the company via its venture capital arm Fluxunit. The start-up has developed a smart indoor growing box, the plantCube, that serves as a salad, vegetable and herb garden for the home. Even users without any gardening expertise are now able to greatly increase yield due to a specially optimized LED technology and other innovations.

The new SFH 4787S Infrared LED (IRED) for iris scanners illuminates the eyes so evenly that the software identifying the iris pattern now hardly needs to correct artefacts. Like its predecessor (SFH 4786S), its direction of emission is slightly angled rather than vertical, thus simplifying the design process by eliminating the usual mechanical aids.

International project improves LED properties

Given the growing demands placed on the electrical, optical and thermal functionality of LEDs, engineers are paying more and more attention to the advancement of new material properties. As a result, the FLINGO project (Functional Inorganic Layers for Next Generation Optical Devices) was established to develop new materials (layers, in particular) and processes to improve the efficiency and durability of LEDs.

High-performance sport meets high-performance lighting: Osram crowned the celebrations commemorating its 110th brand anniversary with a spectacular event at the top of the Zugspitze, attended by some of Germany's best ice hockey players. Eight members of Germany's championship winning team, EHC Red Bull Munich, played an evening ice-hockey game against a stunning alpine backdrop, with the help of high-tech lighting provided by Osram.

Air-conditioning systems can be breeding grounds for bacteria and viruses, particularly if they are not cleaned regularly. What’s more, air conditioning systems can distribute these pathogens throughout the entire room. With Air Zing 2020 from Osram, a UV light based retrofit solution for window air conditioning units these germs and organisms are being effectively combated for the first time.
