Partnership to shrink full-colour microLED pixels by 87%
A partnership has been announced between Plessey Semiconductors and Nanoco Technologies to shrink the pixel size of monolithic microLED displays using Nanoco’s cadmium free quantum dot (CFQD quantum dots) semiconductor nanoparticle technology. Using its existing monolithic process, Plessey will integrate the Nanoco CFQD quantum dots into selected regions of blue LED wafers to add red and green light.

It has been announced by Plessey that visitors to its booth at CES 2019 will be the first to wear AR and VR glasses powered by microLEDs. The next generation of Vuzix smart glasses will be demonstrated using technology that ditches OLEDs in favour of microLED displays. Vuzix is the first company to present Plessey’s microLEDs in action for AR applications.

Hyperion 1750 LED lights up UK tomato greenhouse project
Plessey has announced that Sterling Suffolk will install Plessey’s new Hyperion 1750 LED top light in its first greenhouse, which measures 54,400m². The Hyperion 1750 is the latest LED grow light in the Hyperion product range and has a maximum light performance output of 1750micromole/s, equivalent to a 1000 W SON-T. All Hyperion grow lights come in a range of standard and tailor-made spectrums, with a host of features and benefits designed to ensure a higher commercial return to growers.

Developer of LED technologies and manufacturer of solid-state lighting products, Plessey, has announced a partnership with Dutch alstroemeria grower Together2Grow, following a successful trial of its LED grow lights combined with existing high-pressure sodium (HPS) lighting in a hybrid installation. The four-month trial, managed by Maarten Klein, Plessey’s Head Agronomist, has been running since the end of November 2016 at Together2Grow, to assess the benefits of adding LED to existing HPS lighting compared to just using HPS lamps.

Plessey’s ORION beam forming module is now being distributed globally by Mouser Electronics. The Orion PLWS3000 series module represented a size and performance breakthrough for LED lighting modules giving architectural and industrial lighting designers a new level of design freedom. By integrating the LED and optics into a tiny module, the Orion module delivers over 3000 lumens from a unit just 5.6mm thick and 82mm in diameter.

Developer of LED technologies and manufacturer of solid-state lighting products, Plessey, has announced it is running horticultural lighting trials with four of the Netherlands’ leading growers: Villa Gerbera (growing a crop of gerbera), Gebr. Koot BV (tomatoes), Together2Grow (alstroemeria) and Slijkerman Kalanchoe (kalanchoe). The trials are being overseen by Maarten Klein, Plessey’s Head Agronomist. Before joining Plessey, Maarten spent seven years as Research Director of the Improvement Centre at Delphy in the Netherlands.

Plessey launched the Hyperion family of high-power horticultural LED grow lights. Designed specifically to provide supplementary lighting in greenhouses, the Hyperion 1000 and Hyperion 1600 units deliver greater returns for commercial growers through increased productivity while achieving a 40% energy saving compared to equivalent 600W and 1000W sodium grow lights.
