Optical engine platform showcased at OFC 2019
OFC 2019 in San Diego (March 5-7) is providing the platform for II-VI Incorporated and Samtec to unveil a 56 Gbps PAM4 per channel demonstration of the next-generation Samtec FireFly on-board optical engine technology. II-VI’s recently announced high speed vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are embedded within the FireFly system architecture.

A range of optical switches based on a micromechanical/micro optical design are on offer from LASER COMPONENTS. These allow the switches to be built with a large range of fibres including large core and polarisation maintaining (PM) fibres. The switches can be manufactured to be suitable for a range of wavelengths and have low insertion loss, crosstalk and return loss.

Parallelism technology reduces regression turnaround time

Synopsys has announced that Acacia Communications has successfully deployed Synopsys VCS Fine-Grained Parallelism (FGP) technology in production, to reduce regression turnaround time (TAT) by two times. With its seamless integration into Acacia's VCS simulation regression environment on existing X86 hardware platform, VCS FGP delivered these simulation performance gains without any changes or disruption to the existing simulation flow.

Silicon photonics transceiver displayed at OFC 2017
At OFC 2017, the largest global conference and exposition for optical communications, imec presented a 896Gb/s silicon photonics transceiver of a few mm2, targeting future Tb/s optical links. This achievement highlights the scalability of imec’s iSiPP50G silicon photonics platform, paving the way for next-gen short-reach optical interconnects. Driven by exponential growth for interconnect bandwidth in datacenters, single-mode optical transceivers will need to scale to Tb/s capacity and be tightly integrated with network switches.

Tech estimates optical network transmission performance

Fujitsu Laboratories and Fujitsu Laboratories of America have announced the development of a new technology to estimate the transmission performance, and to improve the throughput of optical networks. When adding communication paths to existing optical networks using new wavelengths, the transmission speed was previously set at a safe operation level based on design specifications of optical fibers and communication devices.

Switch transmits data at record-low temperatures
A silicon optical switch newly developed at Sandia National Laboratories is the first to transmit up to 10 gigabits per second of data at temperatures just a few degrees above absolute zero. The device could enable data transmission for next-generation superconducting computers that store and process data at cryogenic temperatures. Although these supercomputers are still experimental, they could potentially offer computing speeds ten times faster than today's computers while significantly decreasing power usage.

Xilinx will display Pro AV solutions with Any-to-Any connectivity at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2017. Xilinx and its Alliance Members’ high bandwidth video processing and compression demonstrations increase innovation, differentiation, and time-to-market. Visit Xilinx at Stand 14-B132 at ISE, February 7-10, 2017, at the Amsterdam RAI. Xilinx recently shipped its first Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC video codec equipped devices, adding to its portfolio of 16nm devices.
