A speciality waveguide, which integrates mid-infrared laser-power delivery and visible aiming beam alignment in a single light-weight fibre, has been released by Molex. The Polymicro Technologies MediSpec Hollow Silica Waveguide fibre is available in 500, 750 and 1000µm inner diameters with a wavelength range from 2.9 to 10.6μm, making it suitable for a variety of laser power solutions.

To withstand sterilisation for invasive medical procedures, the waveguide features a biocompatible Tefzel jacket material. Various terminations, which utilise SMA, ST and FC connectors, are available on request. The Polymicro Technologies MediSpec Hollow Silica Waveguide meets all the labelling, packaging and sterilisation requirements within FDA 21 CFR 820 Quality System Regulation and cGMP.

“Excellent laser guiding and precise visible aiming beam alignment are critical requirements for hand-held probes and other laser-therapy equipment in the operating room,” said Imke Kuester, Business Development Manager, Fibre Optics, Molex. “Until now, bulky articulated arms and hand-held probes carrying two fibre cables, one for illumination and one for laser power delivery, were the only option. Polymicro Technologies MediSpec Hollow Silica Waveguide with Aiming Beam Technology is game-changer. With the combination of visible beam aiming and power delivery in a single-fibre laser for CO2 and Er:YAG laser systems, surgeons now have a light-weight solution that provides safer, easier and faster treatments.”
