A constant-frequency, voltage-mode, external-compensation boost controller has been introduced by Diodes Incorporated. The AL3022 is suitable for TV and monitor manufacturers needing a cost-effective solution for driving LED backlights in 14-42" LCD panel designs.

The boost controller operates at a fixed switching frequency of 140kHz, handles up to 60W output power and uses a 200mV voltage reference to help minimise losses, improving system efficiency. Integrated under-voltage lockout, over-voltage, over-current, over-temperature and output-to-ground short circuit protection ensures overall system reliability.

Reducing the number of external components required for system design, the AL3022 supports both PWM and analogue LED string dimming control methods and delivers accurate line and load regulation. An external control signal of at least 100Hz is required for PWM dimming, while analogue dimming is triggered using a 0.8-2.4VDC signal.

The AL3022 boost controller is supplied in an SO-8 package and is priced at $0.18 each in 100,000 unit quantities. Diodes Incorporated can also provide an evaluation board (ref: AL3022EV1) to qualifying customers.
