Two camera flash LED drivers, both combining a 1.2A boost converter and LED driver circuit, have been introduced by Micrel. Offered in a 9 pin, 1.3mmx1.3mm package, the MIC2873 and MIC2874 operate from 2.7 to 5.5V with up to 92% efficiency. With switching frequencies of 2MHz (MIC2873) and 4MHz (MIC2874), the converters allow for the use of a miniature size chip inductor and small input/output capacitors.

These frequencies reduce the total power footprint to less than 10mm2.The converters can operate in either a flash or torch mode, providing a boost or linear output using a single wire communication interface or through external pins. As well as being fully protected against overvoltage and overcurrent conditions, the converters provide LED short circuit detection and a true load disconnect feature. The converters, which operate from -40 to 85°C, are suitable for Li-Ion battery operated portable applications such as phone cameras, tablet computers, handset video equipment, and digital cameras. Available in 1,000 quantities, the converters are priced at $0.26/$0.30.

"We are excited to offer a leading edge 4MHz switching frequency camera flash solution to our customers. These highly differentiated products are ideal for smart phones or tablet applications where the board space is premium," stated Brian Hedayati, Vice President of Marketing for high performance linear and power solutions at Micrel. "The MIC2873/MIC2874 high efficiency and low standby current also help to increase battery life especially when operating as video flash or when in torch mode."
