Car door mirror indicators with LED integrated design

Optical design is increasingly playing an important role in LED imaging and non-imaging applications, and Selectronic are attempting to meet these needs. Selectronic is keeping ahead of the game according to MD Kevin Dry, citing their LED integrated design for car door mirror mounted LED assemblies for indicators and integral logo lamps.

“LEDs could benefit from better efficiency with a lower power consumption, with a desired beam shape and a uniform intensity distribution in the far field,” said Dry. “And that’s where Selectronic comes in. We are in the fortunate position of having our in-house capability to configure lens and optics to work with LEDs, overseen by the skills of our Technical Manager Xuesong Hu working here in the head office at Witney.”

Hu received a PhD in Optics from Cambridge University and has worked in the university and industrial sectors on optical system design, including free-space optics and fibre optics.

With over ten years’ experience in optoelectronics and optics, he also worked as a research scientist at Sharp Labs in Oxford before joining the Selectronic team as Technical Manager.

“Xuesong has the skills, experience and qualifications to complement our team of experts at Selectronic,” said Dry. “Working with customers on projects in the automotive and consumer sectors, the Selectronic team has been able to bring clarity to the optical design process that ensures that the emphasis on using very high output LEDs can be reduced with direct implications on the costs incurred. 

“As LED usage is made more integrated in applications such as door mirror mounted indicators of wrap around orientation, the challenge to gain maximum performance is increased. By working with the design team at Selectronic customers can be assured of the best possible technical partnership.

“Similar consumer projects, such as audio and kitchen-based products, increasingly utilise multi LED configurations to aid optimum use. Again, the use of well-designed lens units both maximise the visual performance and minimise the cost of materials to achieve best user feedback.”

Selectronic can help your company get started with a customer’s inquiry to design a logo lamp. Xuesong Hu explained: “The challenge of the project was that one would not only need to collect as much light as possible from the LEDs and but also produce a sharp image at the projection plane. Selectronic worked with the customer closely during the entire project. 

“At the beginning, we helped the customer to select the correct LEDs for this application. Then this was paired with a special designed lens that maximised light transfer efficiency and, as a result, the efficiency of the complete logo lamp projection system was maximised delivering a good image quality. Such a customised optical system uses as little current as possible to drive the LED and reduces the optical aberrations.

“As the final result, we would be able to maximise the efficiency of a logo lamp projection system by a customised lens-based optical design. Such a customised optical system maximises the light performance, minimises power consumption and reduces optical aberrations resulting, in the case of the logo lamp, sharp clear images.”
