Toshiba Electronics Europe has expanded its LETERAS family of white LEDs, introducing the TL1L3 series. The 1.0W LEDs combine cost-effective gallium nitride-on-silicon (GaN-on-Si) chips with an industrial standard 3535 lens type package with a footprint of 3.5x3.5mm and a height, including lens, of just 2.42mm.

Depending on the correlated colour temperature (CCT), the small LEDs deliver typical luminous flux ratings of 112-145lm. Comprising seven devices offering colour temperatures of 2700-6500K, the TL1L3 series is suitable for implementation in tube lights, light bulbs, down lights, ceiling lights, street light and floodlight designs. Minimum colour rendering index ratings of up to 80 deliver natural looking lighting.

Operating over a temperature range from -40 to +100°C, the LEDs keep power consumption down with a low typical forward voltage of just 2.85V at a forward current of 350mA. The TL1L3 series devices provide a maximum power dissipation of 3.4W and low typical thermal resistance from LED junction to solderpoint of only 5°C/W.

Usually fabricated on expensive sapphire substrates using relatively small 100 or 150mm wafers, the LETERAS LEDs use a highly cost-effective GaN-on-Si process technology that allows GaN LEDs to be produced on 200mm silicon wafers.
