It looks like a regular roof, but the top of the Packard Electrical Engineering Building at Stanford University has been the setting of many milestones in the development of a cooling technology that could someday be part of our everyday lives. Since 2013, Shanhui Fan, professor of electrical engineering, and his students and research associates have employed this roof as a testbed for a high-tech mirror-like optical surface that could be the future of lower-energy air conditioning and refrigeration.

Optical analyser measures ultrashort pulses

The IQFROG can be used to measure the intensity and phase of optical pulses in both spectral and temporal domains, giving a complete pulse characterisation. It is based on the principle of frequency-resolved optical gating (spectrally resolved SHG autocorrelation) which allows sub-picosecond resolution since it is not limited by the response time of the detector.

Image analysis and AI will change dairy farming
A group of researchers led by Osaka University developed an early detection method for cow lameness (hoof disease), a major disease of dairy cattle, from images of cow gait with an accuracy of 99% or higher by applying human gait analysis. This technique allows early detection of lameness from cow gait, which was previously difficult. It is hoped that a revolution in dairy farming can be achieved through detailed observation by AI-powered image analysis.

Benchtop based IR thermal test system for live testing
A benchtop based PDR IR-TS One IR Thermal Test System has been introduced by PDR, designed to thermally cycle key critical components and assemblies to detect defects. Using PDR’s Non-Destructive Dual Thermal Stress Screening Process, based on a variation on HALT/HASS principles, the system is able to focus the testing on suspected problem areas to safely screen out early field failures caused by design, environmental, production and structural defects.

EOSTATE Exposure OT, the first commercial system for optical tomography worldwide, now provides real-time, camera-based monitoring of the additive, metal-based build process, based on the EOS M 290 system. The solution fully maps each part throughout the build process, layer by layer, regardless of its geometry and size.

Machine vision software for 3D inspection

EVT Eye Vision Technology has presented the machine vision software for 3D inspection, EyeVision 3D. The command 'Profile Match' is actually a Matching Tool for 1D-applications. The command can detect a profile, shape or pattern, which has been taught-in before. For example the command can be used for the inspection of weld seams or adhesive beads. The command checks if the taught-in profile matches the actual profile. In case the tool detects an error, it calculates how big the difference is.
