OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has introduced what it says is the smallest 1 W LEDs for backlighting LCD panels with plenty of light from an extremely small emitter. Measuring just 3 x 3 x 1.6 mm, the two white versions of the new OSLON LX LEDs are perfect for side injection into light guides with a thickness of 2 to 4 mm so the displays can be made with ultra thin profiles. Thanks to the optimized lens, the light can be injected into light guides with exceptional efficiency. This enables the manufacture of ultra-thin and uniform displays with LEDs mounted along one edge only.
The compact LED format and the high light output of typically 75 lm or 90 lm at 350 mA is sufficient to inject the light from two edges or even from only one side to provide uniform backlighting for computer monitors and TVs up to 65” diagonal in size. The integrated polynomial lens with a beam angle of 125° is designed to achieve an injection efficiency into the light guide of almost 80%.

The OSLON LX is available for two color spaces. The multi-white version (High Color Gamut White) covers 100% of the sRGB color space and has a typical light output of 75 lm. The ultra-white version of the LED covers 80% of the sRGB color space and is a little brighter, with a typical light output of 90 lm. Winifred Schwedler, Marketing Manager for LCD Backlighting at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, said: “With the smallest 1 W LED yet, the multi-white OSLON LX is setting the market standards. Manufacturers who require only 80% of the sRGB standard, such as in data processing or industrial applications, can opt for the more efficient ultra-white version, enabling them to achieve the required brightness level with fewer LEDs and with up to 30% savings in costs. So, every customer can have precisely the LEDs that they need for their particular application.”

OSLON LX is manufactured using the latest ThinGaN chip technology with chip level conversion and provides high optical efficiency and extremely uniform distribution of light. The lens is optimized for maximum light extraction, and its beam characteristic ensures a high injection efficiency of almost 80%.
The substrate and lens materials are optimized for very long lifetimes, exceeding those of CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp).

Combined with their exceptionally small size and ideal design for side injection into light guides for manufacture of displays with very thin profiles, these properties make the OSLON LX LEDs a key product for the LCD market. TVs equipped with OSLON LX LEDs will be premiered at the 2009 IFA exhibition in Berlin from September 4 to 9.
